Six Months In Stretford!
It has officially been six months since the opening of our Stretford site, and it’s been such a pleasure to be part of the community. We have come to recognise many of your lovely faces, and are so grateful for the opportunity to bring cinema to Stretford.
There have been many highlights since opening, including National Cinema Weekend, which was the busiest our screens have ever been (and no wonder, with £4 tickets all weekend)! We had a wonderfully chaotic time celebrating our appreciation for film with so many of you.
We’ve had some huge releases over the last six months, including The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Spiderman, Obsession and The Backrooms. It’s been an excellent year for fans of blockbusters, horror, and for light-hearted family fun!
So far, we have held three Sprechen Cinema screenings, which are our live DJ collaborations, including The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Metropolis, and The Passion of Joan of Arc. These have been very popular, and we have two more coming up if you would like to experience a unique and immersive cinema event.
We had the pleasure of participating in Stretford Pride, with a programme of Pride films followed by a DJ set performed by our very own Madeleine.
A Closer Look At September
"Brilliant Film."
"Brilliant Cinema."
"Rock ‘N’ Roll."
Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger” was an audience favourite this month, with the majority of our showings completely sold out!
Many Mancunians left our screens feeling uplifted after the film, which offered a unique perspective on the brothers’ highly anticipated reunion tour. The surprisingly down-to-earth documentary delivered emotive messages centred around mistakes, forgiveness, and the astounding cultural impact of the band.
We received some brilliantly funny and heartwarming responses to the film on our Oasis comments board, with a couple of our favourites below:
Pulp: What Do You Do for an Encore
Our month of musicality continued with another iconic documentary, ‘Pulp: What Do You Do for an Encore?’. An exclusive, live Q&A with Jarvis was included with a standard ticket, and with only one showing scheduled, seats were highly sought after. An epic concert interspersed with snippets of nostalgic rediscovered Pulp footage, and narration by Jaris on the formation of the working-class band, all came together to create the intimate, authentic and effortlessly cool documentary.
I left the screen with a sudden Pulp obsession developing, along with a crush on Jarvis Cocker.
Coming Up in October
Book Club
We have plenty of exciting things coming up in October, including our first ever book club! Following a screening of the new film adaptation, our first meeting will be an opportunity to discuss Verity by bestselling author Colleen Hoover.
The cinema provides cosy space for book (and film!) lovers to convene and chat about the novel during a lead discussion. With themes of obsession, attraction and a chilling plot twist, we are looking forward to kicking off spooky season with this psychological thriller.
Flicks For A Fiver
Until the end of October, tickets will be £5 for university students! Whether you are a fresher looking to relax in a homey environment or a returning student, you are eligible for £5 films as long as you bring your student ID with you.
Sprechen Cinema Presents ‘Nosferatu’
A whole a new way of seeing the (over) 100-year-old silent horror classic Nosferatu by F. W. Murnau. An unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, Nosferatu is horror personified and is a perfect representation of German Expression cinema of the 1920's with scenes & imagery which have defined horror movies over the decades.
This very special Sprechen Cinema screening features a reimagined sound-track of contemporary; underground music mixed live in the cinema by Chris Massey and Richie V. Featuring music by the likes of Teeth Of The Sea, Tangerine Dream, Ambienti Coassiali, Sunno & Boris, Prins Thomas, Cristobal Tapia De Veer, Pendle Coven, Carlton Melton, Ulver, Claudio Simonetti & more…
There is only one special Sprechen Cinema screening of Nosferatu (1922), so if you are interested in the macabre, classic silent cinema, or hearing underground music mixed live - don’t miss out.
Laika’s ‘Wildwood’
This month we are thrilled to be showing ‘Wildwood’, Laika’s new indie animated movie. With Artificial Intelligence becoming increasingly ingrained into society, Laika keeps alive the painstaking art of stop-motion and charmingly handcrafted filmmaking. From the studio behind cult classic, ‘Coraline’, ‘Wildwood’ is the story of a teenager venturing into the magical wilderness to rescue her brother who was kidnapped by crows; I certainly can’t wait to watch this gothic and whimsical siblingly tale unfold.
We show plenty of Art Films at the Northern Light, and we have just introduced our Arts stamp card. Collect a stamp for each Art Film you see with us to earn a free popcorn on your third watch, a free drink on your sixth, and a free ticket on your ninth!
Halloween Classics
Keep an eye on our website this month, as we are bringing back some beloved Halloween films.Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) will return to the big screen, as well as cinema’s most notorious trio of witches in Hocus Pocus (1993).
